She twirled gracefully in his arms on the dance-floor. Meanwhile, Jonathan played wallflower – just like at every other party. While Rebecca danced with her new husband, Michael, Jonathan twirled a white rose in between his fingers. He continued to stand there, watching the two newlyweds as they smiled at one another.

The music ended, then, and more couples moved onto the dance-floor, waiting for a new song to start. Rebecca and Michael made their way around the room, talking to family and friends and posing for pictures. Jonathan watched them as they gradually made their way over to his spot on the wall. Rebecca continued to smile brightly throughout everything. He knew she hated parties like this. Even if it was her own. She'd always been like that, even when she was young. She had punched Jonathan the year she told him she didn't want a birthday party but he threw her one, anyway. A small smile crept to Jonathan's face as he remembered that.

"Hey there!" Rebecca said, approaching him. Her arm was wrapped around Michael's. "You're such a wallflower. To think you were the one who planned most of my birthday parties."

Jonathan shrugged. "If you're not going to plan it yourself, someone's got to."

"I told you I didn't want a party."

"Every kid wants a birthday party!"

"Not this kid!" Rebecca pointed to herself. "I thought you'd learned that when I punched you!"

"Sorry, I'm a slow learner." Jonathan smirked.

"Then am I going to have to punch you again? Because you know I will."

"Go right ahead."

Rebecca laughed as she reached for one of the glasses of punch on the table next to Jonathan. "Here you go," she said as she handed him the ornate glass. Their hands touched as Jonathan took the punch from her. Rebecca's cheeks flushed slightly (or was it the lighting on her makeup?) as her hand floated back down to her side.

"Why thank you…for not punching me, that is."

"Darling?" Michael bent down to his wife. "I see the Harris's over there. I'm going to speak to them, alright?"

"Alright, I'll join you in a minute." Rebecca replied. She watched him disappear into the crowd before speaking again. "Ugh! This is so tiring!"

"There's the real you! I thought she'd left when her fiancé began taking her to balls and cocktail parties along with his fancy rich friends." Michael was the CEO of a popular company and therefore was often invited to parties of which Rebecca had no interest in.

"She did. She was away on vacation. However, she's back now and is going to join you in the wall's flower bed." She leaned up against the wall. "So where's Stacy?"

Stacy was Jonathan's fiancée. She was livelier than most, yet she had a short temper. Jonathan often called her "Scarlet" because she reminded him of Scarlet O'Hara from Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind. "She's in a meeting with the wedding planner."

"Ah. And you're not there because…?"

"Because I marked this wedding months ago on my calendar and besides, you're my best friend. Stacy understands that; in fact, she respects it. Besides, it's mainly venue, and she and I already discussed it."

Rebecca nodded and gently wiped her bangs out of her eyes. Jonathan noticed her shift some, and then her height was noticeably different. He raised an eyebrow. "Shoes." She replied. "I always hated heels, but here I am, wearing stilts. Funny that even in four inch stilettos with a platform, mind you, I'm still almost a head shorter than Michael." Jonathan laughed; Rebecca had always been short, even now that she was 24. "Don't laugh! It's not funny! I hate being short!" She crossed her arms.

"But your small height is what makes you cute!" Jonathan ruffled her hair.

"H-hey!" Rebecca blushed. "You're going to mess up my hair!"

"Since when do you care about how your hair looks?"

"Since this is my wedding, idiot!" She laughed. "Besides, being miniature-sized isn't the only thing cute about me, right?" Rebecca looked up at Jonathan curiously.

"Of course not! There's also your charm, your eyes, your smile, the fact that you can be graceful one minute and a total klutz the next…"

"Hey! Meanie!"

"I'm only speaking the truth! Besides, why do you have to focus on just that one when I also mentioned your smile, your eyes, and your charm?"

"Because people hear negative things. It's human nature. Remember? We learned that in Psychology together!"

"Of course I remember! But what you so rudely call negative really just entices all those around you. It's like your feet have a split personality!"

"You're still a kid. Making jokes no one thinks is funny. Well it's a good thing you decided not to be a comedian! Not that a food critic is much better, though…"

"What's wrong with being a food critic? I like food! Besides, you said it yourself: I am the most criticizing person you've ever met, especially when it comes to food."

"It's not my fault you're such a gourmet."

"But it is the reason you became a chef."

"It is, isn't it? There are so many better chefs than me, though…" Her voice trailed off.

"Who cares? You own a three-star restaurant that serves amazing food. They're recipes you came up with, remember? You have my approval."

"You were also my guinea pig, remember? You told me everything wrong with the experiments I came up with whenever mom wasn't home and it was too hot to play outside."

Jonathan laughed. "The food that went into my mouth that first day was some of the worst I've ever had. Remember how mad your mom would be when she came home? There were ingredients everywhere, piles of plates in the sink, and she would always make us come with her when she went grocery shopping again." Rebecca giggled. "And remember the, uh, what did you call it…"

"Fried lasagna?"

"Yeah! Man, that stuff was nasty! You know how sometimes when you have a nightmare, you wake up with a bad taste in your mouth?" Rebecca nodded. "Ever since that day, whenever I get a nightmare, that taste is in my mouth!"

"You're lying!"

"Am not!"

"Rebecca?" Michael's head popped up above the crowd.

"Over here!" Rebecca replied, raising her hands and putting her shoes back on. Michael pushed through the crowd and stood in front of Rebecca, smiling down at her.

"Remember I told you about my cousin? The one who can do the crazy eye trick?"

"Yeah, what about him?"

"He wants to meet you! Come on!" Michael took Rebecca's hand and began leading her to the crowd.

"Later, Jonathan! Call me later! I'll see you at your wedding!" Rebecca followed Michael and disappeared into the mass of people.

Jonathan waved, then sighed as soon as she was gone. He hated himself for not telling her that he loved her. If not tonight, long ago, in high school, or college. He'd always loved her, when she punched him at her party, when she shoved disgusting food in his mouth, and when she cried into his shoulder over a broken heart. But he never got the courage to tell her, and now it was too late. He began twirling his rose again, letting his mind wander.

I have to get out of here… He thought to himself. I can't stand it any longer. Jonathan let his rose drop to the floor and headed towards the exit, accidentally stepping on the white beauty. He opened the door, into the cold, dark, quiet night and away from the loud, bright wedding. He didn't belong there, anyway. There was happiness back inside there, but he was filled with remorse. Jonathan desperately wanted to kill himself, to end his life, but he knew it would upset Rebecca. He would simply live on, an empty soul, robbed of all emotion, save his love for Rebecca.
